Aspidistra elatior Variegata – Indoor House Plants

Aspidistra elatior Variegata is an evergreen, perennials indoor house plant. It has leathery, elliptic or lance-shaped, dark-green leaves are variegated with creamy-white of various widths. Insignificant creamy-purple blossoms may show up at soil level in spring, but these are often hidden by the foliage.

How to grow and maintain Aspidistra elatior ‘Variegata’:

Light:
The Aspidistra elatior Variegata requires brighter light to maintain its striping. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. It can tolerate low light.

Soil:
It grows best in deep, rich, well-drained soil.

Water:
Water sparingly, and do not allow the plants to sit in water. Cast-iron plants can survive some underwatering if the temperature is not too high, but they suffer from overwatering.

Humidity:
Dry air won’t harm this plant. Wash the leaves occasionally.

Temperature:
Average indoor temperatures around 70°F are ideal. Do not keep the plants at temperatures below 55°F. In mild climates, the plants can be moved outdoors in the summer.

Fertilizer:
Fertilize every two weeks during the active growth period with a diluted liquid fertilizer.

Propagation:
It can be easily propagated by dividing overcrowded clumps in the spring. Each piece of the rhizome should carry at least two leaves and several pieces may be planted together in one 4 inches pot. Do not feed newly propagated plants, their roots should be encouraged to utilize nutrients founded in the new potting mixture.

Pests and Diseases:
There is no serious pest or disease problems. mites and scale may sometimes be a problem. Overwatering may cause root rot.
